Improvements to health care on national cabinet agenda

Health reform will dominate the next national cabinet meeting in a bid to create a patient-centred system.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he would meet in November with state and territory leaders to focus on health care.

“They’re committed to addressing the pressures facing the health system, to deliver a patient-centred and sustainable Australian health care system that provides the best outcomes for our community,” Mr Albanese said.

While the issue was discussed at Wednesday’s national cabinet meeting, there were no concrete outcomes.

Mr Albanese earlier this year announced a $2.2 billion package to overhaul Medicare as part of efforts to strengthen Australia’s struggling health care system.

An Australian Medical Association annual report showed public hospital performance was at its lowest ever, floundering under the weight of ballooning surgery waitlists and emergency department presentations.
